BRUSSELS, (PIC)– A member of the European committee to lift the siege revealed efforts to withdraw the Nobel peace prize from Israeli president Shimon Peres as a result of the aggression on the Gaza Strip. Bahraini literati also launched a similar campaign.

Georgios Anastopoulos, the representative of the European committee in Greece said that the idea of withdrawing Peres’ Nobel prize came after he said a week ago that what concerned him was the interest of Israel, not what was happening in Gaza.

Anastopoulos added that people awarded the Nobel prize came up with this idea which later developed into a general effort and a campaign to collect signatures of intellectuals, writers and scholars throughout the world, pointing that hundreds signed the petition.

Anastopoulos said that after collecting the largest number of signatures on the petition, it would be submitted to the Swedish academy of sciences which is responsible for the award to decide whether to withdraw the prize from Peres or not.

‘Revoke Peres’ Nobel prize’ plea

BAHRAINI writers have launched an electronic petition calling for the Nobel Peace Prize to be revoked from Israeli President Shimon Peres.

The initiative by Bahrain Writer’s Association aims to counter the atrocities committed by Israel under the leadership of Mr Peres, said its president Ibrahim Bu Hindi.

More than 300 people have already signed the petition at www.petitiononline.com/ahmdjm/petition.html including artists and writers as well as political and rights activists.

“This man (Mr Peres) appeared on television and blatantly admitted that Palestinian children were dying, he did not show any sign of remorse,” said Mr Bu Hindi.

“By stating that he was able to protect the children of Israel, he was differentiating between the value of their lives and those of Palestinian children. He does not deserve this prize.”

The petition, written by association member Ahmad Al Ajmi, has also been translated into English, French, Russian and Farsi.

“Peres, who was previously a killer, was honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize,” said Mr Al Ajmi.

“Currently, he is the leading force behind the deaths in Gaza and will surely remain a killer in the future.”

Mr Peres, then Israeli Foreign Minister, shared the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize with the late Palestinian Liberation Organisation chairman Yasser Arafat and the late Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee hailed “their efforts to create peace in the Middle East”. Their contributions to the creation and implementation of the Oslo Accords were viewed as a major step in forming a conflict-free Middle East. “This petition is a call to humanity. Through it, we as intellectuals and writers are showing our hopes for peace, happiness and freedom,” said Mr Bu Hindi.
